Calling all Ciderfans! Taster Menu evening with Kilmegan 25/8/16

24 July 2016 by Matthew Grainger

Our next taster menu evening will take place on Thursday 25th August from 8pm, and we are thrilled to reveal that it will be a scrumptious cider-themed menu, in conjunction with none other than Dundrum's finest, the awesome orchards of Kilmegan. This local manufactuer, who has only been an official cider maker since 2013, has been making huge waves on the international stage in recent months, claiming fistfuls of awards for their hand crafted ciders, including one of just eight trophies at the International Cider Challenge - the first time an Irish Cider has ever been acknowledged at the prestigious event. Other ciders present came from France, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Spain, South Africa and the US, but Kilmegan from NI trumped them all! It is a fantastic milestone for this traditional, small-batch business, helmed by the ever-passionate Andy Boyd, who recounts here the birth of this wonderful local brand -

"In 1967 my father, Maurice Boyd discovered the old orchard that had been planted some seventy years previously beside the old farmhouse that he and my mother had purchased. However, although there were some twenty odd trees of different varieties, only a few were at all palatable. Realising that, due to there originally only being a well as a water supply to the farm, the previous occupants didn’t grow all this fruit to become a Co. Down version of Mr Kipling, but more likely to produce cider for the summer months when the well was low. So in 2009 my wife Karen and I set about trying to make a batch of cider, and the result didn't taste anything like mass produced cider - it was a revelation, tasting fresh and crisp, and as natural a product as you could wish for. Using no added acids, sugar, water or concentrates this was, to me, REAL CIDER and so it began. “Less is more” they say and we agree!"

This will be a very special event attended by Andy himself, who will give us a brief overview of each of his ciders as we will be serving them, alongside a specially prepared, one off menu by Paul, designed just for this occasion. 5 courses accompanied by cider flight is just £50pp, so do come along join us for a night of apple based amazement!

Our next taster menu evening will take place on Thursday 25th August from 8pm, and we are thrilled to reveal
